The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) is a procedure to allow pet dogs, cats and ferrets to travel between Ireland and the rest of the EU without quarantine.

The procedure

To bring your animal into the UK/Ireland under PETS from one of the qualifying countries you must carry out the following procedures in the order shown:

• Have your pet microchipped – with a Europe ISO Standard microchip
• Have your pet vaccinated against rabies within a minimum of 21 days before travel. A rabies vaccine cannot be administered until your pet is 3 months of age.
• We will apply to the Irish Department of Agriculture for a pet passport for your pet. 
• A photo of your pet can be inserted into the passport. However, the primary means of identification for your pet is its microchip. 
• It is also recommended to have all routine annual vaccinations up to date. 
• Treatment against ticks and tapeworm – between 24 – 48 hours before travel is also recommended. This is necessary to prevent the transmission of exotic diseases to your pet during its travels outside Ireland. 
• Treatment against ticks and tapeworms should be repeated within 24-48 hours of reentry to Ireland.

Warning

Any pet which does not meet the requirements of the scheme will be returned to the country of origin or placed in quarantine.
